I only noticed after I bought this book that it had a ‘Richard and Judy recommend’ sticker on it, which wouldn’t generally be a terribly good indicator of a book that I would enjoy. However it was actually quite an pleasant read although I thought it was a bit unstructured, like reading a blog written by the author as he tries to meet the nine astronauts that are still alive. The structure notwithstanding, there are some interesting anecdotes and personal stories from the people who have been to the moon. There was a lot of stuff I didn’t know about how astronauts were chosen for the missions, their training and the impact that the entire experience had on their personal lives.
This book gave me a new appreciation for what a mammoth task the lunar programme was, and provides some interesting cultural context. I also now want to go and see a Saturn V rocket which is apparently just mind bogglingly enormous.
